SAGA KAKALA was created in 2013 by Icelandic creative director, Ingibjörg Gréta Gísladóttir. The brand derives its name from 13th Century Icelandic chieftain Thordur Kakali, a self-assured, strong leader who brought peace to a turbulent Iceland and was popular among his people for improving their quality of life and contributing positively to Icelandic society. Saga Kakala embodies Iceland’s rich history of storytelling and Kakali’s unifying strength by collaborating with exceptional designers to introduce high quality, limited edition products to the discerning consumer market.

KACHINA: The Kachina collection is designed by Icelandic fashion designer, Helga Björnsson. For inspiration Helga looks to the colorful kachina dolls made by the Hopi Indians in Northern Arizona. Helga Björnsson worked as the art director for Louis Féraud´s Haute Couture collection in Paris for years and was renowned and respected for her elegant and artistic design. Together with SAGA KAKALA Helga has designed a collection of silk and cashmere scarves with simple and colorful forms that brighten and excite any attire.

SHIZUKA: The Shizuka collection is designed by graphic designer Hjalti Karlsson of karlssonwilker Inc. Shizuka, a popular woman’s name in Japan, originates from a famous heroine of Japanese history and literature, Lady Shizuka. In Japanese, Shizuka also means quiet, calm and a flower. Hjalti Karlsson worked with New York-based graphic designer Stefan Sagmeister before founding karlssonwilker with Jan Wilker. In 2013, Hjalti was awarded the Torsten and Wanja Söderberg Prize, one of the highest endowed design prize in the world. Together with SAGA KAKALA Hjalti has created Shizuka, a vibrantly colorful collection of scarves, were distortion is celebrated as a means to create a parallel universe of shapes and asymmetric volumes.

GODDESSES: The Goddesses collection is designed by Katrín Ólína Pétursdóttir, an Icelandic designer and author who works in a variety of media including illustration and industrial design. The Goddesses collection is a homage to the creative energy of mythological goddesses from different times and cultures. Venus is featured in colorful feast of symbols. Freyja's cats bask in the mint green sun while Freyja's tears are turned to gold as they wash upon a pink shore in a land of plenty. The goddesses Nótt pulls a veiled cosmic butterflies across the sky and a powerful union of opposites bursts forth on a scarf dedicated to the ever evolving Self. Possessed of a sensibility for the mysterious, Katrín Ólína's work speaks in a language inspired by Jung’s ideas of the collective unconscious, philosophy, mythology, natural history and mathematics.

HAPPY NEW YEAR

We decided to make a new campaign for the US market and got another Saga onboard; photographer Saga Sigurdardottir. Saga always excels in capturing the moment, her pictures are effortless and interesting, processing an almost dream-like quality. The idea for the campaign was fashionistas wearing almost nothing but our silk scarves and we had so much fun playing around with the scarves making tops, skirts and head wraps.
Be sure to look out for the new campaign and our scarves as they will feature in a new online store “Reykjavik Runway”, opening soon.

WE GOT THE SILVER!

We had some fantastic news this week as it was announced Saga Kakala received a silver award for branding by the Graphis Competition.
New York-based publisher of books promoting the best graphic design, advertising, photography and art/illustration, annually invites professional designers from all around the world to compete for a inclusion in their books, awarding the selected submissions Platinum, Gold or silver awards consideration.

Our graphical designer, Maria Ericsdottir the owner of Karousel is the genius behind our campaign.

SHIZUKA 006/COURAGE GREEN

One of our items in the Shizuka collection is this green scarf which we call 006/Courage green. This scarf was added to the collection late in the design process when the designer felt the collection needed a dash of green to make it just perfect. A spot on decision we think.

7 SURPRISING BENEFITS OF SILKS

We just came across this article on Everyday healt’s blogpost about silk and it’s benefits. Here they mention silk underwear, a youthful glowing complexion, relief for skin irritation and healthy shiny hair, just to mention a few.
